Thursday 10th November - Planning Committee Meeting

Despite the thousands spent by Peel on publicity and celebrity videos, people power scored a brilliant victory with the rejection of the proposal to build a waste wood burning power station. Health fears rightfully proved decisive.

Gorse Hill councillor Laurence Walsh was on the committee and cited the thousands of residents who had written to committee members to express their concerns over current levels of pollution. He argued that these fears could not be ignored.

Both Dave Acton and Mike Cordingley spoke to the committee at the hearing expressing their belief that there was a genuine perception in the population that the plant would be harmful to health. That the presence of the M60 and the consequent harmful levels of Nitrous oxides meant that we could not allow further deterioration in air quality.

But the real heroes were the Breathe Clean Air Group whose representatives made incredibly well argued and impassioned speeches opposing the plant. They really won the day.

We hope that Peel will reflect on this decision and resist the temptation to appeal. It would be great if they could use their resources to begin the effort to improve air qualit. Since much of the pollution comes from the M60, let's work together to get Metrolink to the Trafford Centre. Let's make our local town centres vibrant again so we can shop local and lets support walking and cycling as alternatives to the car.

There's real scope for Peel to make a positive difference if they changed their ways.

Collectively the scheme is referred to by Trafford Council as the Sports led regeneration of the Cricket Ground area. However, the overall scheme has little to do with sport, oweing more to municipal hubris.

The scheme's component parts are dealt with separately in these pages:
